According to Chinese state media, Jiang Zemin, the former Chinese president, died Wednesday from leukaemia. He also suffered multiple organ failure.
Jiang died in Shanghai at 12-13 p.m. (0413 GMT). The official Xinhua News Agency reported that Jiang published a letter to Chinese people announcing his death. It was published by the ruling Communist Party and Parliament, as well as the Cabinet and military.
“Comrade Jiang Zemin’s passing is an incalculable loss for our Party, our military, and our people from all ethnicities,” reads the letter. The letter also stated that the announcement was made with “profound sorrow”.
“Our beloved Comrade Jiang Zemin” was described as an outstanding leader, of high prestige, a great Marxist and statesman, military strategist and diplomat, and a long-tested communist fighter.
Jiang was chosen from infamy to head China’s Communist Party following the Tiananmen crackdown against pro-democracy protesters. In 1989, Jiang broke the country’s diplomatic isolation. He also helped to repair relations with the United States, and oversaw an unprecedented economic boom.
