The Department of Health of the Generalitat has announced that it will include an item in the budgets to finance, starting next year, the vaccine that protects against meningococcus type B , until now a recommended but optional immunogen whose cost had to be borne by families.
Medical organizations urge to include meningitis B vaccine in the calendar
Meningococcus B is a bacterium that causes rare infections, with an incidence of 0.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and only 30 confirmed cases in 2020.
However, this bacterium can have very serious consequences in children, such as meningitis and sepsis – an uncontrolled response to an infection – which is why the vaccine is recommended in infants .
The recommendation is to administer three doses of the Bexsero vaccine, between 2 and 15 months of age, which represents a significant cost for families, since each of them has a price of about 100 euros.

Early diagnosis and vaccines put a fence on meningitis
In a statement, the ‘Minister’ of Health, Josep Maria Argimon , has indicated that measures like this “are an example of those that should be promoted to reduce inequalities in health, caused in part by socioeconomic reasons.”
