A total of 54 scientific societies in Catalonia, which bring together some 26,000 professionals, have made a statement to convey their “concern about the acceleration of the fifth wave of covid-19” due to the delta variant and how it is affecting the primary care centers (CAP) and hospitals.
The statement, addressed “especially to young people and unvaccinated people”, was read this Wednesday at a press conference by the Head of Infectious Diseases of the Hospital del Mar (Barcelona), Juan Pablo Horcajada, who has been clear to respect:
“This epidemic has changed, it is no longer like Wuhan [first wave] affects young, and may be played not want to be alarmist, but more than half of those admitted are.. under 50 years. in El Mar there is a 17-year-old boy admitted, “said Horcajada, who is also the president of the Catalan Society of Infectious Malalties and Clinical Microbiology.Young people who have not yet received the vaccine and people who have rejected it are the ones who are entering the most.
THE FAILED DE-ESCALATION
The fifth wave of the pandemic is complicated
The statement of these societies warns that “mortality is rising again” due to covid-19, which is affecting “other patients” with other pathologies that are not being treated as they should. “We broadcast our alert because, although we are in favor of increasing restrictions, we want to call for personal responsibility.
A mature society does not need obligations or prohibitions to understand things. The infection is spreading again to older people. This is a great call to stop this fifth wave among all “, has read the infectologist.
“A mature society does not need prohibitions. The infection is spreading again to the elderly,” warns the statement
Together with Horcajada, the Secretary of Public Health of Catalonia, Carmen Cabezas, has highlighted that, among those admitted to hospitals for covid-19 since July 1, 63.5% were not vaccinated, 10% had only one dose and 26%, the complete guideline.
The same in the ucis: 73% of those who entered these units this month were not vaccinated, 12% had a dose and 15%, the complete regimen. “And most of those admitted without vaccination are at the age when vaccination is offered,” Cabezas stressed.
The ucis “will continue to grow”
The family doctor has also explained that, although mortality from covid-19 in this wave is growing, it is still lower than in other waves. In this wave there is an average of six daily deaths from coronavirus (although yesterday the worrying figure of 58 was reached), while in the fourth wave the average was 12 daily deaths; in the third, 48; in the second, 45; and in the first, 191.
“We have begun to bend the pandemic curve, so we hope to be better every day,” said Cabezas, who has predicted that revenues in ucis will continue to grow “this week and next week,” but after “would have to go down”.
Despite the seriousness, the mortality of this wave is lower than that of others thanks to the vaccine
This Wednesday in Catalonia there are 2,243 people with covid in hospitals, of which 549 are in ucis. The ‘Minister’ of Health, Josep Maria Argimon, said today in the Parliament that in August the peak of 700 patients will be reached in ucis, a figure that was reached in the third wave, after Christmas, which was the deadliest from behind the first.
The vaccine has lowered the average age of those admitted to hospitals and ucis, since the elderly are the most immunized. The average age of those hospitalized has dropped from 71 to 53 years. In the ucis, from 63 to 31.
As Cabezas has said, Spain is among the countries in the world “that have given the most vaccines.” The “fourth country in the world”, according to the Head of Preventive Medicine at Hospital Clínic, Antoni Trilla, also present at the press conference.
In Catalonia, 68% of those over 18 years of age already have the double standard and, in Spain, 61%. In addition, the pandemic is already decreasing in Spain, as in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. These are the three European countries “where the delta variant has had a very clear effect.”
Trilla has acknowledged that neither epidemiologists nor the authorities “had seen this fifth wave coming.” “There has been an explosion of cases that we did not expect. We are better than in other waves thanks to the vaccine,” said Trilla, who also called for individual responsibility.
Catalonia will reach nine million doses of vaccines this week and five million people with one dose.
