Drain Doctor
CONSTRUCTION COMPANY MANAGER HAS THE PRESCRIPTION FOR BUSINESS SUCCESS
Former scaffolder Kevin Carpenter and his wife Anne are launching their own business by taking over the Canterbury and Maidstone franchise of Drain Doctor Plumbing (www.draindoctor.co.uk), the UK’s largest plumbing and drain repair service.
Until recently Kevin was managing a scaffolding firm in Kent. He decided to look into starting his own business because he felt the time was right to become his own boss.
Kevin said: “I was getting fed up with moving around from firm to firm throughout the recession so I decided to start my own business. I discussed the idea with Anne and we decided to go for it. At first we looked at starting a scaffolding business because that is where my experience lies. My wife pointed out that there are so many small enterprises in that market that it would be very difficult to compete.
“We then started to investigate franchise businesses in the maintenance and construction sector that would also provide a service to the public.
“The idea of buying a going concern with the franchise support of a national organisation appealed to us. The Drain Doctor franchise offered an existing and recession resistant business linked to the sector that we wanted to be involved in. We really see this as a life-changing opportunity.”
Kevin is convinced that with the support of Drain Doctor he and Anne can develop more awareness of the business in the area: “The Drain Doctor brand has strength and reputation nationally but I don’t think this is as strong locally.
“We want to promote the Drain Doctor brand and make it the first port of call for anyone in the area with emergency plumbing or drainage needs.”
Very much a family man, Kevin and wife Anne, who will divide her time between the Wincheap office and their four children Jack, Charles, Timothy and Elizabeth, will run the business together.
Kevin explained the couple’s vision for the future: “The plan is first to get the best possible set up within the franchise area with the existing three vans and technicians. We want to maintain this for three to six months before developing the potential to expand to six fully equipped vans by maintaining the traditional Drain Doctor service.
“We aim to continue to give businesses and householders in Canterbury, Maidstone and the surrounding area the same ‘dazzling’ level of service in plumbing and drainage which Drain Doctor provides across the rest of the country.”
