PETERBOROUGH SELF-BUILD PLOT HELPS TO FULFILL COUPLE’S LIFE-LONG DREAM
One of 13 ‘self-build’ plots at Hampton in Peterborough has been bought by a retired couple who have dreamt of building their own home for over 45 years.
Frank and Edwina Davies from Bedford are selling their home and moving to a rented house nearer to the site of their dream property while the building takes shape.
Mrs Davies said: “We will have a builder doing much of the work but we certainly intend to do some of it ourselves – we want to put something of ourselves into the house.
“This is something we have wanted to do since before we were married, over 45 years ago. Now we are both in our sixties we were concerned that maybe we were getting too old to take this on but we decided we have a couple of years left in us yet!”
The couple have used a specialist design company to help them prepare the plans for the house and the same company will assist in managing the construction process. They selected the site at Hampton because of its location.
Mr Davies said: “It was the conservation area right next to the development site that sold it for us. We just love the location.”
A total of 13 self-build plots are arranged along both sides of a winding lane named Winsor Crescent (www.ohland.co.uk) situated between a more conventional professionally developed housing area and a nature reserve which houses Europe’s largest colony of great crested newts.
Roger Tallowin of development company O&H Hampton (www.ohhampton.co.uk) said: “We are delighted to welcome Mr and Mrs Davies to Hampton. They will help us to create a community with a range of housing to suit all needs – including homes for people who want to create something unique to their own individual design.”
The purchasers of the new self-build plots will have a large amount of freedom over the design of their homes. However, a design code drawn up by O&H Hampton and Peterborough City Council sets the standards which individual homes will be required to meet.
•Sales of the plots are being handled by agent ELP – telephone 01733 894513 or visit www.elp-online.com. Details are on the website specially created for the development at www.ohland.co.uk.
