£37 MILLION WINDMILL ESTATE REDEVELOPMENT MOVES FORWARD
Nene Housing has received formal approval from South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) councillors to progress plans worth around £37 million to redevelop the Windmill Estate in Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire.
The current proposal is to demolish and rebuild the 1960s built estate which is currently occupied by a mix of council tenants and private owners. Nene proposes to replace the 194 houses with up to 270 new homes which will be available for rent, shared ownership and outright sale.
While the properties are structurally sound they suffer many of the problems associated with older system-built housing.
Proposals for redeveloping the estate will now be produced in preparation for a detailed planning application being submitted in early 2007. Nene will put the development contract out to tender to its framework panel of contractors.
“This is a momentous day for everyone involved in the project,” said Adam Broadway, director of development at Nene. “The granting of formal approval is a very exciting step forward and justifies all the hard work that has been put into the project over the past three years. It allows us to make progress with the knowledge that the scheme now has council and resident support.
“The next stage will see us working with residents on the estate and South Cambridgeshire District Council to develop plans in preparation for a detailed planning application. All current outline plans are based upon feedback from residents from previous consultation events held earlier this year.
Councillor Deborah Roberts, housing portfolio holder at SCDC, said: “This is about improving not only the physical layout of the estate but importantly the quality of life of its residents. I would like to thank all those who have worked so hard over the past three years to bring this idea to fruition. It is an important and exciting moment, especially for the Windmill residents, and SCDC will continue to participate in the project and looks forward to seeing its completion.”
