SMYE HOLLAND ASSOCIATES ORGANISES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL WASTE ACTION FORUM EVENT

Smye Holland Associates has planned and organised another successful event for The Waste Action Forum (WAF).

The Ardsley House Hotel in Barnsley was host again last week to the latest Waste Action Forum on 29 and 30 June. Over 50 delegates from local authorities, reprocessors and others across the waste management industry attended.

The event boasted many engaging and interesting speakers. Rachel Gray, special advisor for waste prevention for WRAP, spoke on issues concerning waste prevention and supporting local authorities. Jody Sherratt, waste strategy awareness manager for Cheshire West and Chester Council, delivered a presentation on providing waste prevention at local level. Terry Gould, head of public protection for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, and Sue Igoe, managing director of RecycleBank, discussed incentives for recycling and waste prevention for households. Finally, Dr Jane Beasley, director of Beasley Associates rounded up the presentations by speaking on partnerships and efficiency.

Andy Doran, chairman of the Waste Action Forum, said “These events are instrumental in prioritising the issues of waste management, at both a council and corporate level. It is great that it has been such a resounding success and I hope this and future events may lead to an increase in public awareness in regards to the pressing topic of waste management.

“We also hope that by organising further events like this, we can broaden our membership to include more members of the waste supply chain.”

Founded in 2003, WAF now has hosted over 17 events or conferences and its influence extends into the glass, paper, plastics, metals, general packaging, electronic and retail sectors.

WASTE ACTION FORUM DISCUSSES THE CARBON AGENDA

More than 50 delegates from local authorities, industrial and commercial sectors of the waste industry attended the Waste Action Forum on 23 and 24 March at the Ardsley House Hotel in Barnsley.

The Carbon Agenda was the theme for this forum event, a topic that has significance for all those involved in the waste chain. A variety of speakers discussed how The Carbon Agenda affected the different sections of the waste chain that they are involved in.

The forum was extremely interesting and included thought provoking discussion and debate across the two days.

There were presentations from Judicaelle Hammond from DEFRA, John Sanderson from UPM, Andrew Craig from Tees Valley Joint Strategy Unit and Ann Ballinger from Eunomia.

The event was sponsored by Ardagh Glass, UPM Kymmene, Valpak, Novelis, Petainer and WRAP.

PARTNERSHIP TO BE THE THEME OF NEXT WASTE ACTION FORUM EVENT

Partnership along the waste chain will be the theme of the next Waste Action Forum (WAF) event, which takes place at Birmingham's Lea Marston Hotel on December 1-2.

The impressive line-up of speakers includes representatives of most participants in the chain - local authorities, industry drivers and leading retailers, who have a keen interest in minimising waste packaging.

The full speaker list includes Nigel Pritchard, WAF chief executive, Dr Jane Beasley of Jane Beasley Associates (who will present the "view from Mars" of someone with no vested interest in the waste chain), Keith Reiley of Veolia UK, Rowland Hill of Marks & Spencer, Bernard Chase from Linpac and Andy Doran, chair of the WAF steering group.

Delegates will enjoy a dinner on the Tuesday night, followed by a full day of open and free-flowing discussion on the Wednesday.

The Forum is sponsored by Ardagh Glass, Novelis, UPM and Valpak.
