PETERBOROUGH SELF-BUILD PLOT HELPS TO FULFILL COUPLE’S LIFE-LONG DREAM

One of 13 ‘self-build’ plots at Hampton in Peterborough has been bought by a retired couple who have dreamt of building their own home for over 45 years.

Frank and Edwina Davies from Bedford are selling their home and moving to a rented house nearer to the site of their dream property while the building takes shape.

Mrs Davies said: “We will have a builder doing much of the work but we certainly intend to do some of it ourselves – we want to put something of ourselves into the house.

“This is something we have wanted to do since before we were married, over 45 years ago. Now we are both in our sixties we were concerned that maybe we were getting too old to take this on but we decided we have a couple of years left in us yet!”

The couple have used a specialist design company to help them prepare the plans for the house and the same company will assist in managing the construction process. They selected the site at Hampton because of its location.

Mr Davies said: “It was the conservation area right next to the development site that sold it for us. We just love the location.”

A total of 13 self-build plots are arranged along both sides of a winding lane named Winsor Crescent (www.ohland.co.uk) situated between a more conventional professionally developed housing area and a nature reserve which houses Europe’s largest colony of great crested newts.

Roger Tallowin of development company O&H Hampton (www.ohhampton.co.uk) said: “We are delighted to welcome Mr and Mrs Davies to Hampton. They will help us to create a community with a range of housing to suit all needs – including homes for people who want to create something unique to their own individual design.”

The purchasers of the new self-build plots will have a large amount of freedom over the design of their homes. However, a design code drawn up by O&H Hampton and Peterborough City Council sets the standards which individual homes will be required to meet.

•Sales of the plots are being handled by agent ELP – telephone 01733 894513 or visit www.elp-online.com. Details are on the website specially created for the development at www.ohland.co.uk.

HAMPTON SELF-BUILD DEVELOPMENT TAKING SHAPE NOW ROAD IS UNDER WAY

Work has commenced on construction of the road which will provide access to the ‘self-build’ plots in Hampton.

The road will serve the 13 self-build plots which are arranged along both sides of a winding lane named Winsor Crescent in Hampton, situated between a more conventional professionally developed housing area and a nature reserve which houses Europe’s largest colony of great crested newts.

Developers O&H Hampton (www.ohhampton.co.uk) selected GKL Group (www.gklgroup.co.uk) to undertake the work, which will see the road and driveways completed along with the fencing and landscaping of the area.

James Brackenbury, director at GKL Group, commented: “The work has begun and is going well. We have allocated four months for the project and are confident that it will be completed on time. The construction of the new infrastructure has provided some interesting challenges with the high specification finishes such as the granite set channels, bespoke red cedar bin stores and brick entrance piers. We are confident that the quality of workmanship will compliment this specification.”

Roger Tallowin of O&H Hampton commented: “Now that the road and landscaping is taking shape we can more clearly see the way in which the self-build plots are defined. Careful consideration went into the style of the landscaping and it is great to see it coming to life. Each individual plot will have its own metal rail fencing complete with gate. The brick entrance piers at either end of the development distinguish Winsor Crescent from the surrounding development.”

• Sales of the plots are being handled by agent ELP – telephone 01733 894513 or visit www.elp-online.com. Details are on the website specially created for the development at www.ohland.co.uk.

Notes to editors:

1. A total of 6,900 homes will be built to form the township on the 2,500 acre brown field Hampton site just south of Peterborough.
2. O&H Hampton has been managing and developing the site since 1997 and the project is planned to continue until at least 2017, providing new homes, state of the art education and community facilities and over 12,000 jobs within its retail, commercial and industrial areas.
3. Under O&H Hampton management, Hampton delivers up to 500 homes per year working with approximately 20 different house builders providing a wide choice of design for the public.
4. O&H Hampton is integrating ‘green infrastructure’ into the development to make the township an attractive place to live, work and play. For every house in Hampton the township also has 230 m2 of nature reserve, 180 m2 of lakes, 80 m2 of mature woodland and 40 newly planted trees. Around 50 per cent of the site is being retained as open space, parks, lakes, woodland and nature reserves. The Hampton development is used as an exemplar in Natural England’s current “Green Infrastructure Guidance”.
5. Development has recently passed the half-way point with the sale of the 3,450 th home.
6. Since the original planning permission for 6,900 homes was granted, additional homes have been approved at nearby Hempsted which is also being developed by O&H Hampton.
7. Hampton lies three miles to the south of Peterborough with a direct link into its centre; to the mainline rail station and by bus or car via the A15. The area is also readily accessible from the A1(M) and the A1139 Fletton Parkway.
8. Hampton Vale is the second residential-led mixed use neighbourhood to be built at Hampton. Comprising around 1,800 dwellings it includes Hampton College (the secondary school for Hampton), Hampton Vale Primary School and a neighbourhood centre.
9. The design concept behind the self-build plots at Winsor Crescent is based upon the creation of a privately managed low key street serving a number of individual dwellings, where the public realm, shared street landscaping, together with the palette of materials used in the architecture of individually-designed homes, provides a high quality and attractive setting for the site as a whole.
10. Winsor Crescent is not the first self-build development at Hampton. Seven self-build plots were released in 2000 and were quickly built on to create a number of diverse and architecturally-interesting homes which have become a focal point within the new community.
