COLOPLAST PUTS STAFF WELLBEING AT THE TOP OF THE AGENDA

Peterborough-based medical appliances company Coloplast (www.coloplast.com) is launching an initiative to improve the wellbeing of its staff.

Coloplast is inviting staff at its Peterborough office to attend a series of wellbeing forums. These will provide staff with an opportunity to put forward their views on current and potential benefits which would make a difference to their daily lives.

Sam Sedwill, HR director at Coloplast, explains: “The wellbeing of our staff is important to us at Coloplast. We pride ourselves on listening to what our staff are saying so we have set up a series of forums to capture their input on how we can improve their time at work.

“We’re open to ideas – yoga classes at lunchtimes, chill out areas, wellbeing clinics – it will be interesting to see what people suggest. The most popular and innovative ideas will be put forward for consideration by the senior management team. Benefits which focus on an employee’s health or general wellbeing can make a real difference and it’s important that our staff know how valued they are within the company.”

Earlier this year Coloplast was named by the Sunday Times as one of the UK’s top 100 companies to work for. As part of the award process Coloplast staff were asked to give their views on eight key areas of their relationship with the company. One of the areas was wellbeing (how employees feel about stress, pressure at work and work-life balance) and by setting up these workshops Coloplast is further demonstrating that it deserved the award.

COLOPLAST LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE SILICONE WOUND DRESSING IN THE UK

Today (1 September 2010) Coloplast (www.coloplast.com) launches a new foam dressing with silicone adhesive, Biatain Silicone, in the UK. Biatain Silicone combines the superior Biatain foam with the gentleness of the silicone adhesive delivering a versatile and easy-to-use wound care dressing.

Biatain Silicone has been developed following consultations with more than 1,000 nurses and doctors in five different countries, including the UK. The feedback provided Coloplast with valuable insights that have helped pave the way for the launch of the new silicone wound dressing.

Christoffer Melchior, Business Unit Director, Wound Care, Coloplast Ltd said: “What the health care professionals asked us to do was to develop a flexible dressing that can be used for the treatment of many different kinds of wounds, including leg ulcers, non-infected diabetic foot ulcers, post operative wounds as well as second degree burns. By combining our popular foam dressing, Biatain, with a unique skin-friendly silicone adhesive, we’ve come up with Biatain Silicone, which makes it both easier to apply, reposition and remove the dressing, thereby causing a minimum of pain to end-users.”

Biatain Silicone was launched in both France and Germany earlier this year. A recent survey among 101 French nurses and doctors has shown that 80 per cent would recommend Biatain Silicone to their colleagues and that another 94 per cent would probably or certainly prescribe Biatain Silicone to end-users.

“The numbers prove that we’re not alone in thinking that this new product is great. Before today’s launch, we’ve also introduced a number of British nurses to Biatain Silicone and they have become instant believers as soon as they’ve had the chance to try the product. Biatain Silicone has silicone only where it is needed and foam where you need it”, Christoffer Melchior explains.

COLOPLAST EMPLOYEE BIKES ACROSS THE UK FOR CHARITY

Peterborough-based Coloplast (www.coloplast.com) employee Howard Keir has completed a gruelling bike ride across the UK, covering more than 990 miles.

Howard and his sons James and Nathan took on the challenge of biking from Lands End to John O’Groats to raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research. They completed the route in just 13 days, cycling around 75 miles a day.

Asked why they chose to bike the infamous Lands End to John O’Groats route, Howard said: “We were looking for a challenge - something that wouldn’t come easy, that we weren’t doing because we enjoyed it but that would give us a sense of achievement. In the past I’ve done lots of running and decided it was time for a change.”

Howard works for Peterborough-based medical appliances company Coloplast which develops products and services that make life easier for people with very personal and private medical conditions including stomas. Given his day job and his love of football, Howard felt that the charity choice was an obvious one.

Howard said: “My sons and I are huge Bobby Moore fans. As a family we’re sports mad, we love football and have great admiration for Bobby Moore.

“When we decided we wanted to do the bike ride for charity it all came together. Bobby died of bowel cancer and in my day job I help people who live with conditions including bowel cancer. It’s also World Cup year so the timing was right.

“We are delighted that we’ve been able to raise money for such a worthwhile charity and pay tribute to someone who we have great respect for.”

Howard added: “It certainly was a challenge - it was hard work, we were wet, tired and our bodies were telling us to stop but as the days went by we found our cycling legs and it got easier as we went. I’m not sure I’d say it was enjoyable but the last few days were a lot less gruelling than the first!”

Howard and his sons organised the event themselves from planning the route to locating suitable bed and breakfast places.

Howard added: “If anyone would like to make a donation we would be delighted – a lot of people share our admiration for World Cup legend Bobby Moore and we are proud to be raising money in his name.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation should go to www.justgiving.com/james-keir0. The website will be accepting donations until 1 September.
